Romeo und Julia

With Ballett Zürich, Ballet Director Cathy Marston and General Music Director Gianandrea Noseda bring one of the world’s most famous love stories to the stage this May: Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s timeless drama meets the compelling music of Sergei Prokofiev, whose rich colours and dramatic power Gianandrea Noseda, an acknowledged expert in this repertoire, brings vividly to life with the Orchestra of the Zurich Opera House.

Cathy Marston has long been fascinated by Shakespeare’s work: its vivid imagery, its distinctive poetry, and its finely drawn characters. For her as a choreographer, the story of Romeo and Juliet—with its wealth of both external and internal dramatic possibilities—is as much an inspiration as it is a challenge. Within the most confined of spaces, the entire spectrum of human emotion unfolds: tender longing, deepest despair, revenge, and irreconcilable hatred. Precisely for this reason, it promises to be particularly exciting to see how she approaches this material with the ballet company and reinterprets it anew.

You can gain an exclusive insight into the choreographic rehearsal process for the new production Romeo and Juliet at “Meet the Ballet” on Wednesday, 29 April 2026.
